A Tsimshian Legend This tale is of Native American folklore. It is a story told by the
Tsimshian tribe. The title is The Theft of Light.
Giant flew eastward and inland. He continued his flight over the
land for a long time. Fianlly became tired and decided to go over the
sea. Giant had a little round stone which his father had given to him. He
dropped it into the sea and became a very large rock.
Giant lay down to rest on it. He took off the raven skin that he had
been wearing.
During that time the world was always dark. Daylight did not yet exist.
Giant put on his raven skin and flew again toward the east. He arrived
at the mainland and came to the mouth of the Skeena River. He stopped
there and scattered the salmon and trout roe. Giant then said, " Let
every river and creek have all kinds of fish."
However, the world was still dark. The people would get a little
light from the stars when the sky was clear. But when it was cloudy, only
darkness was overhead. Giant realized that the state of total darkness
was an inconvenience for him. It would make it hard for him to find his
food. He had come from heaven and knew that it had light. So he decided
to bring light into the world.
The next day Giant put on his raven robe. His father, who was the
chief, had given it to him as a gift. Giant soared upward and found a
hole in the sky. He flew through it and reached the interior of the sky.
Then he took off the raven skin garment and placed it next to the
opening in the sky. Giant went for some distance and came to a spring. It
was near the home of the chief of heaven. Giant sat and waited for a
while.
The chief's daughter came out of the house. She was carrying a
small bucket and intended to get some water. Giant saw her approaching. He
changed into a cedar leaf and floated on the water. The chief's
daughter obtained some water and drank it, swallowing the leaf in the process.
Soon she became pregnant and long long after that, gave birth to a
boy. The chief and his wife were very happy. The gave the boy baths on
a daily basis. He started growing up and began to creep around. They
continued to bathe him and the chief cleaned the floor of the house. The
child became strong and crept around even more.
Then he began crying, "Hama, Hama!" He was crying all the time and
the chief worried about it. He asked the slaves to carry the boy. They
carried him around, but he went for several nights without sleeping. He
continued to cry, "Hama! Hama!"
The chief invited several wise men who were his advisors and said
he did not know what the problem was. The boy wanted the box that was
hanging in the chief's house.
The box hung in one corner and contained daylight. It was called maa.
Giant had known about it for a long time. The child kept on crying for
it.The chief was very irritated. His wise men listened and said that
they did not know what the child wanted.
But one of the advisors was more perceptive than the others. He
said that the boy wanted the maa. The chief ordered that the box be taken
down and handed to the boy, so he could play with it. The boy rolled
the box around for several days. The chief thought nothing of it.
Then the child took the box and ran out the door. Someone yelled,
"Giant is running off with the maa!"
Several people of heaven pursued Giant, but he outran them. He
reached the hole in the sky and put on the raven skin. Giant quickly flew
down to earth.
The world was still dark. Giant arrived at the mouth of the Nass river.
He continued on and went up the river. Some people were in their
canoes. They were using bag nets to catch olachen.
The people were making a lot of noise. Giant said, "Throw me one of
those bags."
Then he said it again and they scolded him. They said, "Where did you
come from, great liar, whom they call Txamsen?"
However, the people (They were the animal people) knew it was
Giant. They continued to make fun of him. He repeated his request four
times, saying that if he did not receive one of the bags, he would break the
maa. The fishermen were the frog people. Giant finally broke the maa
and daylight appeared all over the place. The north wind started blowing
hard. It drove the frogs away and the ones who had ridiculed giant were
carried down the river. Those frogs came to a huge mountainous island.
They tried to climb the rock, but the north wind caused them to stick
to it. The frogs were transformed into stone and are there to this day.
Now the world had daylight.
